An often hotly debated topic in med-related forums is physician compensation. I’ve read countless articles written from a doctor’s perspective, and those articles are usually filled with math and long sentences. I found this infographic particularly refreshing, as it puts the numbers into pictures that, well, a middle school student should understand. After all, when I was working at NBC, I was told that anything you write news-wise for public consumption should be tailored to a 6th grade comprehension level. That is why I love infographics. Enjoy!

This is truly enlightening. Didn’t know the hours and debt for a doctor would be that much. Ouch! I should show people this when they think I’m doing it for the $$!

Oh wow. This is hectic. I should work this out with South African values and see what it comes down to!

Calculation is easily skewed. Whoever made the graphic appears to have overlooked that the 28% tax rate is the marginal tax rate for the last ‘portion’ of income earned (cutoffs depend on how one files… single, married filing jointly, etc). Actual ‘average’ tax rate is much lower, and this is a common mistake in net income calculations.
Nonetheless, thanks for sharing the fun infographic… would love to see a coriented version.

Although I’m glad that, as you stated in your article, you were gracious enough to dumb down the infographic to the level of a 6th grader, maybe you shouldn’t have also had that 6th grader do the math for you.
Also, I’d love for you to tell any teacher that the only time they are working is when they are physically in the classroom.

I didn’t actually make the infographic itself so I can’t take credit for it (the source is listed below the image), but I think because both doctors and teachers work outside of the time they are physically at work, the calculations did not include those hours for simplicity’s sake.
I was wondering, I have been getting over a thousand page views for this article posted a while ago, and they’re all linking from facebook. Out of curiosity, which page referred you to this post?

This doesn’t take into account the many outlying factors of each profession. I suggest that unless it’s going to include EVERY factor you shouldn’t make such a huge claim. I am a doctor who is licensed to teach so I know both sides. This infographic does not take into account the personal sacrifices made, and the abuse our teachers put up with. Get all the facts or don’t post something at all.

Thank you for your comment. I did not suggest that this infographic includes every factor, and it is meant more as a discussion starter than anything else. Also, I think medical physicians or anyone who knows a physician personally can attest that there are many personal sacrifices made and plenty of abuse to go around in the training process. There are a lot of factors on both sides for teachers and physicians that are impossible to quantify into this calculation. This infographic helps to raise awareness that while society on the whole seems to think physicians make a fortune once they are done with the decade-long training process, there is more to the story than meets the eye.
