Today is the first ever National Women Physicians Day, honoring Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell, the first female to receive a medical degree from an American medical school in 1849. She was an intelligent passionate lady who pushed relentlessly for medical education for women, paving the way for female physicians today. As of 2014, there are almost the same percentages of female and male medical school graduates, and the percentage of females in medical school is only rising!
In the spirit of National Women Physicians Day, I wanted to share with you readers a few amazing female doctor-bloggers I’ve been fortunate to get to know through social media. Each is a superwoman in her own right – strong, powerful, brilliant, caring, beautiful, hard-working, and the ultimate multi-tasker. These are websites you need to include on your blogreader for some serious inspiration!
Freud and Fashion: Dr. Vania is a psychiatrist who is so open and honest about her own experience with her field, making her that much more relatable to patients and to her readers. She highlights physician burnout as a problem and discusses her own journey through the pressures of being a new attending. Her blogposts are so educational regarding psych issues which can be highly stigmatized in our society today. She makes me want to do more internal reflection and focus on my wellness in the crazy time of residency!
Love and the Sky: Dr. Love is knee deep in intern year but still made time to start a blog that gives excellent and pertinent career advice for young professionals, not just in medicine but in all other fields too. Her recent post on choosing a specialty was spot on and she discusses ALL the important factors that go into choosing your career, even the ones people don’t usually want to talk about. Cannot wait for her to join me at NYU Dermatology next year.
A little bit of Lacquer: Dr. Laura Lacquer is another future dermatology colleague who showed me that physicians can have SUCH a powerful unique and amazing voice in social media, and that you can do it all while having two cute babies too! She had her second baby during intern year, which is definitely no easy feat with the crazy hours and demands of intern year. She is truly a superwoman and such an inspiration to us all. Hope our paths cross someday!
The Foodie Physician: How cool is Dr. Sonali Ruder?! She is an emergency medicine doctor who also trained at a culinary institute, runs a food blog worth salivating over, AND has published several cookbooks! No doubt her recipes are healthy, jam packed with nutrients, and delicious. She is basically my hero.
Dr. Majestic: She doesn’t have a blog (yet?) but she does awesome informative posts on Instagram and on Periscope. She’s pushing the envelope of being a physician educator and reaching hundreds of people beyond her ER patients through her online presence. Check her out!
Thank you ladies for continuing to inspire me and others continuing along the path to medicine. You are all rock stars and I feel honored to be able to call you my colleagues.
Do you have any other physician bloggers you follow? Please share below! I would love to connect with them as well!
