Doximity Residency Ranking 2017-2018

Doximity’s 2017-2018 residency program navigator is released! I compiled a list of the top 10 programs for each specialty based off a methodology taking into account multiple factors, as noted below under Methodology. You can filter the rankings to search by reputation, research output, size of program, percent subspecialized, and percent board certified. I have compiled the top 10 of each based on reputation and then by research output. You can compare this year’s findings to last year’s rankings, and see if there was much change.

Adapted from what I wrote last year: the reputation rankings are compiled from survey responses from physicians in that field, including both alumni and non-alumni of various programs. The methodology explains that, “To account for “self-votes”, raw votes were divided into alumni-votes and non-alumni votes. Alumni votes were weighted according to the % of the eligible physician population that a particular program accounts for within that specialty (number of alumni divided by total eligible within the specialty).” I personally am not entirely sure how that math works but it sounds like alumni votes for their home program were counted less than non-alum votes for that program.

The methodology explains there is also a “current resident” ranking that polls current residents and recent graduates on happiness level and thoughts on their programs. I just want to put it out there that I tried to log in and rate NYU but I didn’t have that option! So I’m not sure how that happened.

Here are some of the new features this year:

  • Additional program data: Discover and search over 4,000 programs spanning 28 specialties, including integrated interventional radiology.
  • Program map view: In addition to a list view, students can now see programs shown on a map view, where all the programs are represented as pins. Students can view this map after they conduct their first program search.
  • Favorites list: Medical students can now add programs to their favorites list and add personalized notes about each program.
  • People like you: See people from each program who went to the same medical school or chose the same specialty. This gives students the opportunity to reach out directly to current residents who may be pursuing a similar career path.
