We’re back with another #DermsHolyGrail, this time featuring the lovely Dr. Alyx from University of Miami! Don’t forget to check out all the other regimens that have been featured to get the inside scoop on what dermatologists actually use on their own skin.
Name: Alyx Rosen Aigen
Practice setting and job title: Academic; Assistant Professor of Dermatology, Mohs and Cosmetics, Dr. Phillip Frost Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Surgery
Fitzpatrick skin type: II
Oily vs. Dry vs. Combination skin: Combination
AM Regimen:
*Spironolactone was life changing for me – although not a “topical treatment” it was truly the first thing that helped combat my hormonal acne. Originally was on 50mg twice daily but now down to 25mg daily (stopped during pregnancy because of birth defect potential)
Cleanser: Gentle cleanser usually, VMV Hypoallergenics Moisture Rich Creammmy Cleansing Milk OR Glytone Mild Cream Cleanser (OTC option I also really like in summer time is Cetaphil Pro Oily Skin)
Extras (antioxidants, medicines, etc.):
Antioxidant: Currently using SkinBetter Alto Defense Serum, but love Skinceuticals CE Feurulic and ISDIN Flavo-C Ultraglican but very hard to travel with and a little bulky but great product
Others: Glytone Enhance Brightening Complex – 2-3 times a week
Neostrata triple firming neck cream
*Skinceuticals Discoloration Defense (mix with antioxidant usually) UV index in Florida is so strong that even with sunscreen every day I still developed sun spots when I moved down here.
Eye cream: Skin Better – Interfuse Lines – eyes or Zerafite hydrating and protecting eye serum
Sunscreen: Ugh so hard to choose.
Non-tinted: Revision multi-Protection Broad Spectrum SPF 50
Tinted: PCA Sheer Tint Broad Spectrum SPF 45 or Elta UV daily tinted
OTC: Cerave New Ultra-light Moisturizing Lotion
Pure Mineral option: Tizo AM Replenish SPF 40 with antioxidants (tinted) – feels like a silky mouse on the skin
Foundation / Concealer:
Just spent a whole afternoon at Sephora with the makeup artist from my wedding (who is amazing) and went out and bought all new makeup and brushes and I am so happy.
Charlotte Tilbury Youth Boosting Perfect Skin Foundation – light wonder
For light coverage: Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter OR OTC option Neutrogena Hydroboost Hydrating Tint (got this at an AAD a few years ago and when I tried it I was happily surprised and have continued to buy it since then).
Primer: Dermablend instagrip jelly primer or Tatcha the silk canvas (splurge but loving it so far)
Started used a mascara primer and aside from extending lashes and separating them, it also helps remove the mascara at the end of the day so I am not scrubbing as much
PM Regimen:
Makeup remover: Neutrogena makeup remover pads or La Roche Posay Micellar Wash
Cleanser: SkinBetter Refresh Oxygen Infusion Wash or the Milk cleanser if my skin is dry
1-2 times a week ill use a scrub – have recently been using the SkinBetter Refresh detoxifying scrub mask or *Neutrogena Rapid Clear with BP for short-contact spot treatment
Toner: none
Serum: Neostrata Tri-therapy lifting serum with Aminofil or SkinBetter Interfuse Intensive treatment Lines
Extras (antioxidants, medicines, etc.):
Neck: Neostrata (as above) or Alastin Restorative Neck Complex (really worried about developing techneck these days!)
*Retinol: Neostrata Retinol + NAG Complex Rotate (holding for now ☹ ) — Missing my retinoid like crazy these days – I can’t use it while pregnant!
*Retinoid: Retin-A micro 0.08% gel (holding for now ☹ )
SkinCeuticals Glycolic 10 Renew Overnight (2-3 times a week) (Has recently replaced my retinol on a regular basis)
Moisturizer or Night Cream: PCA hydralux or Zerafite Soothing and Calming Moisturizer
Eye cream: Revision – DEJ eyes
#1 Favorite Can’t-Live-Without Skincare Product: Oral Spironolactone medication (before pregnancy) for hormonal acne, Now: Great facial cleanser – always on the hunt for a great cleanser that can removal residual makeup and isn’t too irritating, really liking skinbetter right now
Anything else you want me to add:
Intralesional kenelog injections (steroid shots!) have also been my best friend for small but painful isolated cystic acne lesions these past few months – can sometimes leave a small area of indentation that resolves in a few weeks to months
Transitioning skin care when pregnant can be a challenge – its also important to talk to your dermatologist if you are trying to get pregnant to make sure you aren’t taking any medications or using any topicals that would be unsafe in pregnancy.
