We’re back with another #DermsHolyGrail, this time featuring the lovely Dr. Lisa, who practices along with her husband and fellow dermatologist Dr. Jon (whom we will feature next week)!
Don’t forget to check out all the other regimens that have been featured to get the inside scoop on what dermatologists actually use on their own skin.
Name: Lisa Guidry Pruett, MD FAAD
Practice setting and job title: Private practice at Trinity Dermatology, a part of US Dermatology Partners in Dallas,TX
Fitzpatrick skin type: 3
Oily vs. Dry vs. Combination skin: Combination
AM Regimen:
Cleanser: I am currently trying out Alastin Gentle Cleanser but I also love SkinBetter Science Oxygen Infusion Cleanser. It has glycolic, lactic and salicylic acid so it a step up from a regular gentle cleanser like Cetaphil or Cerave and I love that it doesn’t dry me out.
Extras (antioxidants, medicines, etc.): Antioxidant always…my go-to is the SkinBetter Alto. I used to use the SkinCeuticals Phloretin but I think Alto is a bit better at reducing free radical damage. I use a brightener or lightener also to combat my melasma. I alternate between SkinBetter EvenTone and a prescription compound of hydroquinone and kojic acid.
Sunscreen: My all time favorite is EltaMD UV Elements. It’s a tinted, moisturizing sunscreen and I use it every day. The Alastin Sunscreen that is similar I like also as the consistency is also very moisturizing, but Elta has a higher percentage of zinc so that’s why I like that one a bit more. I also love Colorescience powder as a touch up, especially if I’m outdoors. SkinBetter Science has a new stick that I also love for putting on my hands/arms/neck/chest if I need to cover those up outdoors. Or I’ll use my solwearMD wrap!
Foundation / Concealer: Currently using YSL Touche Eclat Le Teint radiance awakening foundation but I also love Armani Luminous Silk foundation/ for concealers, but all time favorite is Colorescience mineral correcting palette—it has several different colored powders that you can mix and blend based on what you are covering up.
PM Regimen:
Makeup remover: Neutrogena makeup removing cloths but currently trying Bioderma Sensibio micellar water which I like also
Cleanser: same as AM
Toner: I really don’t like the word “toner” and tell my patients they don’t need them. Just cleanse well and then put your actives on!
Serum: I’m also not into using the word “serum”. I rather think of the active ingredients the products have.
Extras (antioxidants, medicines, etc.): I use Aczone gel in the evening for hormonal acne and then apply my lightening/brightener same as the AM. I then apply the SkinBetter AlphaRet for my retinoid.
Moisturizer or Night Cream: If I’m dry, then I’ll use a moisturizer. I love SkinCeuticals Triple Lipid Repair —I believe that one they studied against laMer and it outperformed that super-expensive brand, but the Alastin Ultra Nourishing Moisturizer I’m currently using and like that one a lot. For my lips, I love Cerave Healing Ointment. I use that twice daily on my lips to keep them hydrated. I’ve also tried the Restorsea LipMagic and love that product too. I use Nectifirm by Revision on my neck.
Eye cream: To be honest, I haven’t found a holy-grail eye cream. Of all I’ve used, I like SkinBetter Interfuse Eye and I’m currently trying Alastin’s eye cream.
#1 Favorite Can’t-Live-Without Skincare Product: My solwearMD wrap that my derm BFF Julie Danna (she’s a dermatologist in New Orleans) and I created. It’s a patent-pending UPF rated cover up I love to throw on when I’m wearing a tank or t-shirt or swimsuit that keeps my arms, chest, and back protected from the sun, because who wants to apply sunscreen and reapply to really protect those areas?! I think of it like a hat for my upper body. But it is super lightweight, very nice Italian fabric so I don’t feel hot when I’m wearing it.
Anything else you want me to add: Alastin Nectar is a great product to use to prep your skin before a treatment like a laser or microneedling. It improves the collagen and elastin production in your skin and decreases the downtime you get from those types of procedures. I recently used it to prep for a Morpheus8 Radiofrequency Microneedling treatment and it has definitely helped in my recovery from the procedure, and should give me greater results.
