Another post for #DermsHolyGrail, this time featuring Dr. Zain Husain a board-certified dermatologist from New Jersey. I love learning about what my fellow male dermatologists use on their own skin; it gives me ideas about what products are convenient and easy to use! Fun fact: we actually worked on a paper years ago when I was a medical student, and we only figured this out through collaborating on this Derms Holy Grail post!
Don’t forget to check out all the other regimens that have been featured to get the inside scoop on what dermatologists actually use on their own skin.
Name: Zain Husain, MD
Practice setting and job title: Private Practice, Owner of New Jersey Dermatology and Aesthetics Center in Marlboro, NJ
Fitzpatrick skin type: 4
Oily vs. Dry vs. Combination skin: Combination
AM Regimen:
Cleanser: La Roche Posay Toleriane Purifying Foaming Cleanser– affordable, gentle cleanser that does not dry me out
Extras (antioxidants, medicines, etc.): SkinBetter Science Alto Defense Serum- anti-oxidant serum containing vitamins C and E, that does not break me out with acne (unlike several other serums such as Skinceuticals CE Ferulic serum)
Eye Cream: Skinbetter Interfuse Eye Treatment Cream- great eye cream packed with vitamin C for brightening, caffeine for decreasing undereye puffiness, and peptides for minimizing crow’s feet and fine lines
Moisturizer: Cerave moisturizing cream– inexpensive, hydrating and contains ceramides to help protect the epidermal barrier
Sunscreen: EltaMD UV Clear Tinted- hydrating physical sunscreen, contains niacinamide to help calm acne, and universal tint blends perfectly with my skintone
PM Regimen:
Cleanser: Refresh Cleanser (My skincare line, contains 5% Glycolic Acid, Aloe Vera Gel)- I love glycolic acid’s exfoliating and brightening properties and the aloe gel prevents my skin from drying out like other glycolic washes
Toner: None
Serum: Isdin Melatonik Serum- I was intrigued by bakuchiol (an ingredient that has similar clinical results as retinol, but with better tolerability) combined with Vitamin C and melatonin for a great nighttime serum that did not exacerbate my acne.
Extras (antioxidants, medicines, etc.): Retin-a Micro 0.08% gel – I have been using a retinoid nightly since my early twenties and this has helped control my acne, prevent wrinkles, and keeps my skin looking youthful
Moisturizer or Night Cream: Cerave moisturizing cream(Spring-Fall) / Skinceuticals Triple Lipid (Winter)
Eye cream: Skinbetter Science Interfuse Eye Treatment Cream- same as above
#1 Favorite Can’t-Live-Without Skincare Product: Topical Retinoid- Retin-a Micro 0.08% gel- liquid gold!
Anything else you want me to add: Usually I perform chemical peels every 2-3 months (usually modified Jessner’s Peel with 20-30% TCA) for rejuvenation. I also do monthly dermalinfusion treatments (Silkpeel by Envy Medical, now rebranded as Diamondglow by Allergan).
