It has been 4 years since I last published my top sunscreen picks here; we are way overdue for another sunscreen ranking! Since 2016 I have tried and discovered many other favorites, and I want to share them with you today.
Being a new mom with limited time, I look for sunscreens that multi task for me, acting as sun protection, makeup, moisturizer, anti-aging, and more. To break it down, these are some qualities I look for:
- broad spectrum (blocks UVA and UVB), SPF 30+: I personally use SPF 50+ if I’m going to be outside in the sun for a long period of time
- super easy to rub in without leaving a white or greasy cast
- tinted with iron oxide to help prevent blue light induced hyperpigmentation
- bonus if it contains antioxidants and moisturizer
Keeping that all in mind, my top five favorite sunscreens for summer 2020 are
- bareMinerals complexion rescue tinted hydrating gel cream SPF 30
- Alastin Hydratint pro mineral broad spectrum sunscreen SPF 36
- Colorescience Sunforgettable Total Protection Face Shield SPF50 PA+++
- La Roche Posay Anthelios Ultra Light Mineral Sunscreen Fluid SPF 50
- Supergoop Unseen SPF 40
Here are some of my thoughts about my top 5 picks.
1. bareMinerals complexion rescue tinted hydrating gel cream
I am a huge fan of the bareMinerals sun protection protects which also double as makeup! I love reaching for this tube because this is a fully mineral sunscreen that feels incredibly lightweight. It provides glowing light buildable coverage while delivering a boost of hydration (multi-tasking product!). When I use this product it feels like I’m not wearing any makeup or sunscreen; that’s how invisible it feels on the skin!
One thing to note is that you do need to wait 5 minutes after applying another product before applying this gel cream; otherwise you risk pilling on the skin.
2. Alastin Hydratint pro mineral broad spectrum sunscreen SPF 36
This mineral tinted sunscreen option is great for anyone who desires a bit more coverage. I find that when I use this sunscreen, I don’t need to use any additional powder or foundation on top, since this is thicker and covers all my dark spots and freckles.
Of note, this sunscreen may be better for medium to darker skin tones; I have heard from my friends who are more fair that this sunscreen can leave a slightly orange tint.
3. Colorescience Sunforgettable Total Protection Face Shield SPF50 PA+++
The Colorescience tinted mineral sunscreen truly is a universally flattering tint, and I like that it contains both an SPF (for UVB) and PA (for UVA) rating. It feels like a lightweight moisturizer but the tint provides just enough coverage. It comes in a regular, an extra glowy, and a bronzer formulation. I personally like the regular shade; the glowy sunscreen makes me look a bit too shiny for clinic and the bronzer is too dark on my skin tone. This sunscreen also comes in a body formulation as well.
4. La Roche Posay Ultra Light Tinted Mineral Sunscreen Fluid with SPF 50: This is one of my tried and true favorite sunscreens that I have been using for a long time. The sunscreen feels light on the skin and has buildable tinted coverage. The texture is great, and it rubs in easily with no white cast.
One thing to be mindful of is that if you use too much of this sunscreen you may risk a bit of an oily sheen, so don’t overdue it!
5. Supergoop unseen sunscreen SPF 40
This is my top pick for men because the Supergoop sunscreen truly goes on invisible with zero tint or white cast. Out of all the sunscreens I’ve tried, it rubs in the most easily It’s oil free as well, which makes it a great choice for acne prone oily skinned individuals. This is the one that my husband uses
If you have sensitive skin you may not want to use this one because it is a chemical sunscreen, which may cause irritation.
